Friendly Shark
a shark was floating in the sea
and thought about the why
of what it was that made him want
the swimmers that swam by

was it their legs and tasty toes?
or different shapes and size of nose?
he thought and thought for days and nights
while passing up some juicy bites

the answer at last came to him
near dawn of the 5th day
he was merely being friendly
in a sharky kind of way

then wondered he, submerged in wet
how could he be a swimmer's pet
at once he knew the answer plain
a "sharks are friendly" ad campaign!

with teeth all white and fins waxed clean
he beached upon the sand
and asked the people tanning there
their thoughts about his plan

but no one spoke one word or two..
as minutes passed, more weak he grew

the shark thought that the air was thin
and sun was much too bright..
and don't you know the beach patrol
had shark to eat that night!

During a recent lunch break at home i found myself chatting with a 4 year old about chicken people. The conversation eventually drifted to my t-shirt and the image of a shark which was on it. The young lad thought the shark was smiling and i wondered if there are friendly sharks. The first draft of this poem was written less than 60 minutes later. The lovely artwork was produced by Sarah Zurawell, a famous pugilist from an igloo in Canada. I particularly like the sign with a shark face next to a "#1". The yellowish stain on the bottom left side is a result of storing the artwork in my trunk for half a month. Sorry.
